October starts the countdown to Halloween, and movie studios have prepared for this by releasing thriller and horror themed films. With decorations, dark colors, spooky music and costumes all around us this month, the entertainment industry makes sure they are ready with their part for the holidays. These movies contribute to the creepy atmosphere and will surely get you into the Halloween spirit.
October gets us off to a good start this year with some well-done, sinister movies being released in theaters on the first. One highly anticipated horror film this month is the sequel Hatchet II. This gory film picks up right where the last one left off with Marybeth, played by Danielle Harris, escaping from the horrible and iconic killer from a Louisiana swamp; Victor Crowley. In this film, Marybeth uncovers the truth about her family’s connection to the killer and is determined to return to the infamous swamp for a bloody revenge. She is not alone though, and brings with her a strong group of hunters to help her find the bodies of her family and punish Victor for his horrific rampage. This film is an homage to the slasher films of the early 80’s and is filled with guts, gore and disturbing scenes that will creep you out and leave you shaken.
Another anticipated film releasing on the first is an English language remake of the Swedish film Let the Right One In. Let Me In stars Kodi Smit-McPhee as Owen and Chloe Moretz as Abby. In this remake, Owen is a bullied pre-teen who’s life is about to change when he meets a new neighbor in the next apartment. Abby is the new, mysterious, girl next door who befriends him when no one else will even talk to him. In fact, she might be the only true friend that he has, and even influences Owen to stand up for himself. However, something doesn’t seem quite right when they only meet at night and bodies start to turn up. Could there be a link between his new friend Abby and the murders, or is this simply a coincidence? This film is very well-done and atmospheric; creating eerie sensations and feelings of fright that will have you checking under the bed and scared to enter dark alleys.
Case 39 is yet another horrific thriller opening this week in October, and stars Renee Zellweger as social worker Emily Jenkins. In this film Emily takes an interest in a special case regarding abused 10 year old Lilith Sullivan, played by Jodelle Ferland. Wanting to save this child from violent parents, Emily involves herself with the family but soon learns that something more menacing is plaguing Lilith and is soon to uncover details that she might not be able to handle. With mysterious and terrifying thrills throughout this movie, you will be frightened the whole night through.
All of these films use engrossing characters, dramatic effects, and shocking scenes to scare and awe movie goers. They also do a great job at getting your heart pumping and sending chills down your spine; a great way to start off the month-long event known as Halloween.
